Week 2: Digital Document

This digital document, an infographic, will accompany my eLearning course, Technology Resources for Educators: Support Student Learning Using Engaging Tech. This will be used during Module One, Lesson One to help learners understand what a Kahoot! is in order to transform one and support learning in their own classrooms with it.

Digital Document

My approach to the digital document is based upon the four principles of visual design: contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. These design elements are expected by the audience as the document is viewed. Utilization builds trust with the audience producing buy-in, and  furthering the engagement of the learners.  These elements are clearly demonstrated in the following ways:

  • Contrast - Bright, yet rich alternating colors set against a solid background allows the purple and orange to stand out. The stark difference in the deep colors and the bright white lettering completes the look.

  • Repetition - The purple, orange, purple, orange color pattern makes for predictability and allows for unity throughout the document. Pictures are also placed strategically to illustrate the informational headings of each section.

  • Alignment - All elements are aligned horizontally or vertically to connect with other elements to produce harmony throughout the infographic.

  • Proximity - Ideas are grouped together with subtitles as headings. Each group is spaced out from the other groups to show which ideas belong together and/or apart.

Blank OER Checklist

I added to my OER Checklist this week. I believe it was necessary to add a section on the Principles of Visual Design, including contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. These ideas are paramount in graphic design and as such impact instructional design greatly, which is why I felt that it was imperative that they be included on my checklist for assessing resources.

OER Checklist Applied to Design Document

The resource, Kahoot! What Is It? is a resource that is a functional introduction to the game Kahoot! I will use this to aid in meeting Objective One: Transform Kahoots to support student learning concepts taught in the classroom. The learners must understand what a Kahoot! is if they are going to transform a Kahoot! and support learning with it. This resource will be used in Module One, Lesson One. The addition of the Graphic Design Elements section to this checklist is key to evaluating resources for use in instructional design.

I was able to download my Design Document from Canva as a Powerpoint and then upload it into Articulate Storyline in Powerpoint form. I tweaked the infographic by swapping out the fonts that were unavailable and changing the spacing as well. Next I added an icon, turned it into a button and added a trigger. I uploaded the audio and set the trigger to play the audio when the button is clicked. Then I uploaded my Storyline “Story” to Amazon S3, copied the HTML link, and embedded it into my Wix webpage. After all the different things I tried, this approach was the most rewarding because I was finally able to publish my document with audio, as well as a few additional features that Storyline provides (magnification and volume control)!
