Choosing a Learning Management System

During the first week of my final course, the decision must be made about which Learning Management System (LMS) I will use to host my course. However, it is more than just a simple decision. Many factors go into this kind of choice, and I have spent much time researching which option will be best for my course and situation.

Canvas Free for Teachers

I have chosen to use Canvas Free for Teachers as my LMS for this project. After reviewing the information, I have found it will meet the needs for my course. The features available in this free version include: announcements, assignments, discussions, grades, people, pages, files, syllabus, outcomes, quizzes, modules, conferences, collaborations, course settings, and more. I may not need all of these items at the moment, but I still have a few things left to add to my course prior to completion and having extra options may be beneficial. I want my course to look and feel as professional as possible, and I believe that Canvas can help me with this achievement.

The free version has no time limit on it and the storage capacity per course is 500MB and 50MB per person, which my course falls well within, leaving me room to grow and complete my course without worry. Canvas is compatible with Articulate Storyline 360, which is what I have been using to build the majority of my course. I have chosen Canvas because it has been around long enough that there are many resources available to help me learn how to use it.

My course is broken up into three modules that include screencast videos, animation videos, interactive slides, a learning check, feedback, encouragement, layered resources, a sorting activity and assignments. I have designed application assignments for learners, who will then post reflections and screenshots to the discussion group. Learners will also respond to others within the discussion group, so it is most important to have access to these capabilities.
